Project Reference – Polymer Compounder

Introduction

Enge Plas Automation partnered with a leading polymer compounder to deliver an end-to-end solution for their extrusion and powder handling operations. The collaboration aimed to enhance material handling, improve compounding consistency, and optimize overall plant efficiency while maintaining a clean and safe production environment.

Challenges

The customer faced multiple challenges common to high-performance polymer compounding:

  • Inconsistent feeding: Fine thermoplastic powders tended to clump or flow irregularly, leading to unstable extrusion performance.
  • Dust accumulation: Handling of fine powders generated airborne dust, creating safety hazards and increased maintenance demands.
  • Equipment wear and downtime: Irregular material flow and dust exposure accelerated wear on extruders and associated equipment, impacting production reliability.
  • Product quality variability: Powder handling inefficiencies directly affected the consistency and quality of the compounded polymers, risking customer satisfaction and compliance with industry standards.

These challenges highlighted the need for a holistic, integrated solution that addressed both material handling and extrusion performance.

Solution

Enge Plas Automation proposed and delivered a combined solution:

  1. Coperion Twin-Screw Extruder: Supplied and installed to provide consistent and efficient compounding of high-performance polymers. The extruder ensured better dispersion of additives and improved processing stability for the customer’s specialized compounds.
  2. Deduster System: Implemented upstream of the extruder to remove excess fines from the powdered polymers before feeding. This improved flowability, prevented clumping, and reduced dust-related operational and safety issues.

The solution was designed and integrated as a single, streamlined system, ensuring seamless interaction between powder handling and extrusion, and allowing the customer to achieve consistent, high-quality output without additional operational complexity.

Results

Following the implementation of the integrated system, the customer experienced significant improvements:

  • Enhanced product quality and consistency: Stable feeding and fine removal improved compounding performance and final polymer properties.
  • Cleaner and safer production environment: Dedusting reduced airborne particles, lowering health risks and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Reduced maintenance and equipment wear: Fewer blockages and dust-related issues decreased downtime and extended equipment life.
  • Operational efficiency: Integrated powder handling and extrusion streamlined the process, simplifying operations and boosting overall plant productivity.

This project not only solved immediate operational issues but also enabled the customer to maintain consistent, high-quality production for demanding polymer applications.

Conclusion

Through this project, Enge Plas Automation demonstrated its ability to deliver end-to-end process solutions for complex powder handling and compounding challenges. By integrating advanced extrusion technology with a dedicated deduster system, Enge Plas Automation helped the customer achieve improved product quality, safer operations, reduced maintenance, and enhanced operational reliability — establishing itself as a trusted partner for long-term process optimization in the polymer industry.
