Project Reference – Automated Dosing System for Plastics Compounding Application

Introduction

A plastics compounding and masterbatch manufacturer required a more precise and reliable method to control the addition of base resin, colour pigments, and functional additives within their production process. As product performance and colour consistency are critical in this industry, tight control over formulation ratios is essential.

Enge Plas Automation was engaged to provide an automated dosing solution using the Movacolor MDS Balance gravimetric dosing system, improving dosing accuracy, repeatability, and material efficiency while integrating seamlessly into the existing compounding line.

Challenges

The existing process relied heavily on manual weighing and feeding of raw materials. This created inconsistencies between batches due to human error. Even slight deviations in pigment or additive ratios could result in noticeable colour variation and dispersion inconsistency, particularly in high-specification masterbatch production.

Overdosing of expensive additives also led to unnecessary material losses, affecting cost efficiency. In addition, limited process monitoring made it difficult to trace formulation data or conduct detailed quality analysis when issues arose. The high dependence on manual operation further increased operational risk and reduced overall process stability.

Solution

Enge Plas Automation supplied and implemented the Movacolor MDS Balance gravimetric dosing system to automate and precisely control the feeding of raw materials into the compounding process.

The system provided accurate and repeatable dosing of pigments, additives, and other materials according to the required formulation. Gravimetric control helped minimise dosing deviations and material wastage while improving batch-to-batch consistency.

The automated system also reduced reliance on manual operation and enhanced process monitoring, providing greater control and transparency throughout production.

Results

Following implementation of the Movacolor MDS Balance gravimetric dosing system, the manufacturer achieved improved formulation accuracy and more consistent colour output across production batches. Precise material feeding helped reduce material wastage and improve cost efficiency.

Automation also reduced labour dependency and improved operational stability, contributing to smoother production flow and more reliable manufacturing performance. Enhanced monitoring capabilities further strengthened quality assurance and process traceability.

Conclusion

The implementation of the Movacolor MDS Balance gravimetric dosing system, supplied by Enge Plas Automation, transformed the manufacturer’s compounding process from a labour-dependent operation into a more controlled and data-driven production environment.

By ensuring accurate, repeatable, and traceable material dosing, the system strengthened product quality, reduced material costs, and enhanced operational efficiency. The solution addressed key production challenges while providing a reliable foundation for scalable growth in the plastics compounding industry.
